A four-week
training course for Somali journalists, led by Maria Frauenrath,
head of the BBC training department, was completed last week.
The course,
held in Shaamo hotel, Mogadishu, was funded by the European
Commission's Somalia Unit and conducted by instructors from
the BBC's training department.
The course
covered the ethics of journalism, general principles of reporting,
the role of the media, human rights and democracy. Somalia,
without a central government for a decade, has, with donor
assistance, increased the number of local and regional newspapers
and radio stations over the last few years.
