Call to Muslims on advent of new year

ISLAMIC scholars yesterday,the 14th March 2002 called upon Muslims to renew their bonds with Allah and return to the true path of Islam.

Speaking on the advent of the Islamic new year which coincides today, counted from the day of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) migration from the holy city of Makkah to Madinah, the scholars urged Muslims to re-live the spiritual and physical journey taken by the Holy Prophet to spread and consolidate the foundations of Islam.

In a ceremony held on the occasion at the Shaikh Khalifa mosque by the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Auqaf, the scholars encouraged Muslims to draw lessons from the sufferings and harships that the Holy Prophet endured in order to find a friendly place to spread God's message.

Leaving the persecution of the pagan community in Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) migrated to Madinah where he found a more receptive society which embraced him and Islam.

Omar bin Khattab, the second caliph, introduced the Islamic calendar in its present form in 641AD -
