New projects launched in Somalia’s Bay region aimed at reducing poverty –
Nairobi (1 November 2001) – A new series of projects aimed at reducing poverty and stimulating economic growth in Somalia’s southwestern Bay region were signed this week under UNDP Somalia’s Poverty Reduction and Economic Recovery (PRER) Program.
The integrated rural development projects include three main components: (1) oil extraction, packaging and marketing, 2) grain milling, packaging and marketing and 3) promotion of improved bee-keeping, processing, packaging and marketing. These projects will be implemented in partnership with UNDP Somalia by the international aid agency World Vision.
“These economic activities will benefit an estimated population of 70,000 people, and about 10,000 Somalis will directly benefit from the projects,” said Jean-Luc Stalon, UNDP Program Manager in charge of PRER. “We are now getting into the nuts and bolts of economic development at the grassroots level.”
The Poverty Reduction and Economic Recovery program was one of three major new programs launched in July 2001 by UNDP Somalia. UNDP Somalia currently runs several programs across Somalia in the areas of peace and security, governance, and economic and social recovery.
