More
than 30,000 children were immunised against polio in a three-day
campaign in the Somali capital, a doctor told AFP here Tuesday.
The campaign,
spearheaded by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), was launched
at the weekend.
"The medical
people, assisted by community members, went from house to
house and knocking on doors to immunise the children against
polio," Ahmed Ali Abdullahi said.
Mogadishu
elders said UNICEF operations have been crucial for Somali
women and children in the absence of adequate public health
facilities throughout the country since the government collapsed
following the overthrow of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in
1991.
