A conference
to deliberate on ways and means of enhancing food security
in the Horn of Africa will open here today,the 2nd of July
2001, with officials from the World Bank, the UN,Donors,Aid
Agencies and Governments in the region attending .
The three
day meeting convened by the World Bank, follows the one held
in Rome last March to discuss strategy for the implementation
of a UN long-term food security plan for the region .according
to the UN and World Bank documents made available to AFP yesterday
.
One clear
conclusion of the March 22 meeting was the need for Governments
of the region and their development authority (IGAD) to take
the lead in implementing programs to eliminate food insecurity
, according to a World Bank document .
All IGAD
member states Djibouti,Eritrea , Ethiopia , Kenya, Somalia
Sudan and Ugandha are expected to participate the meeting
.
