United States Support Gives Impetus to the Disarmament Efforts in Somalia
Hawiye Action Group (HAG) welcomes the positive reaction of Government of the United States in its Press Release on June 22, 2005 towards the disarmament efforts of the Somali leaders in Mogadishu, and its acknowledgement of the contributions of the Somali civil society to this end especially the Somali women groups who have shown strong leadership in this endeavor. This will surely give the impetus needed to move forward with the voluntary disarmament of all the militias all over the country.
The people of Mogadishu have shown their preparedness to commit to peace and deserve a helping hand. We ask the United States to play a more active role in supporting this effort and contribute the resources needed to disarm and retrain the militias. We deem the leadership of the United States very critical at this very difficult time in Somalia.
We share the Government of the United States' principle that peace can be achieved in Somalia through dialogue within the framework of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.
We thank the Government of the United States for its support of the Somali people and the peace process.
We urge the people of Somalia to reject violence and reaffirm their commitment to peace and constitutional order.
