DOES ISMAIL OMAR GUELLEH DESERVES NOBLE PEACE PRICE?

Somalia's problems are characteristic of many African nations. As every person knows foreign countries or outside forces could not provide a lasting solution to Somalia 's social and economic difficulties. These statement does not mean Djibouti is a foreign country. Djibouti is a member of the big family (Somalia) and no one can deny that because it is a naked reality in front of our eyes.

After 1991, 13 conference failed to make any tangible progress leaving the country without a government for 10 years.Somalia became under the control of warlord, bandits and armed thugs (moryaan). This kind of chaos led to the U.S.-UN intervention with the intention to end the violence and hunger. Although the humanitarian goal was achieved, the United Nations found itself in unexpected hurricane.

After 10 years of violence, destruction, widespread hunger, disease and intimidation by the warlords, the solution came from H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh president of Djibouti. He knows the Somali people, their culture, religion, language and not only that, but ethnically he is one of them. Even though Djibouti has it's own government and flag; still it is one of the five Somali jurisdiction.

On 22 September 1999,President Ismail Omar Guelleh put forward his home made plan for peace in Somalia and spoke in front of the General Assembly of theUnited Nations. Mr. Guelleh's peace plans were based on Somali's traditional system of government or let's call it indigenous way. After intensive consultations with different Somali clans, there were invited intellectuals, elders and for the first time women's group.

The Somali National Peace Conference, which had been formally opened in Djibouti on 2May, is in its final stage and 95% of the Somalis are optimists about the result. From the effort of Djibouti and the support of UN and International community, Somalia will have a legitimate government for the first time since 1991.

If President Ismail Omar Guelleh succeeds where the UN and International community failed, does he deserves the Noble Peace Price? In any way he will make a good candidate for the Noble Peace Price. Mr. Guelleh's work represents a comprehensive approach to the peace and Prosperity of those who cannot defend themselves from their own people.
